Corinthian Helm - Museum Replicas

Reason for purchase

The ancient Romans enjoyed many a parody of Greek culture and Myth in the games and arenas about the Roman Empire, the helmet was bought to illusrate this. Thinking about it now we need not have done this, however the helmet is a constant source of comment and allows us to engage the public in conversations about the Roman relationship with Greek culture.

Delivery

Delivery was prompt, within the time frame specified. The helmet was in good order, rust free and well padded out in a double box.

Initial Thoughts

I must admit to being surprised at the quality of the helmet, the pictures in the Museum Replicas catalogue do not do it justice. Heavier and much larger than I would have guessed at, although subsequent research has shown the weight of this version to be more much more accurate than my guesses. Very well put together and almost seemless from the outside.

12 Months On

This helm has managed to withstand the test of one year quite well. The splits caused by the strapping have not grown, subsequently we have also removed the straps. The only complaint would be that Museum Replicas have a habit of laquering everything they produce, I imagine that as a wall hanger this would mean the helm would not need regular cleaning, only a light dust. However it is a constant distraction for us and had to be removed which seemed to take forever.

The Helmet

The only difficulty arising when we rivetted it to take a chin strap, this has caused a split to appear, but this was my fault as I placed the rivet in the centre of the work between two sections of the helm. The nose guard had to be bent forward slightly to accomadate anyone with a normal sized nose, luckily we only needed to move forward a small amount. Generally in good order and caught me by surprise.
